Mercer MPF Satisfaction Index reached 10-month high in January

  • Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Mercer today released the latest findings of the Mercer Mandatory Provident Fund Satisfaction Index (Mercer MPFSI). The monthly index recorded a score of 53.2 in January 2019, up 2.4 points from 50.8 in December 2018. The score marked a 10-month high for the Mercer MPFSI. Overall, the MPF satisfaction levels stay around 50 out of 100.

“The global investment market deteriorated in the second half of last year. As the market stabilized in January, members were more positive about the overall performance of the MPF,” said Billy Wong, Mercer’s Health & MPF Business Leader, Hong Kong.

“However, a positive return is not the only factor contributing to the satisfaction levels of MPF members. Engagement is the key driver in MPF satisfaction levels and as such we encourage MPF members to review their portfolios at least once a year, to help them feel more satisfied about the scheme,” Mr. Wong added.

Understanding investment types leads to higher satisfaction levels

The study also showed that members who understand the types of investment in their MPF account are more satisfied. In January, the satisfaction level of people who understand the types of investment was 53.9, which was more than 17 points higher than people who do not understand (36.3).

“The MPF investment period lasts for several decades, which means members’ investment objectives and risk appetites will change with age. Therefore, we encourage members to learn more about the characteristics and risk levels of different types of funds, in order to build their most suitable retirement portfolio,” said Mr. Wong.

Note to editors

The Mercer MPFSI was conducted by Nielsen to track the satisfaction level of MPF members. The survey interviews more than 2000 respondents per year who are among the working population with MPF and whose monthly personal income is not less than HKD 7,100 (minimum threshold eligible for MPF membership). The survey was conducted through methods of online self-completion (age 20 – 54) and offline street intercept (age 55 or above).
