Speed Read:

  • Vast majority (about 99%) of MPF funds record a positive 1-year return as of 31 December 2019, with an average return of 12.6% (equity funds: 18.0%, bond funds: 4.0%), despite some major turbulence throughout the year such as Brexit, the US-China trade war and the ongoing political instability in Hong Kong. 
  • Greater China equity funds and North American equity funds were the best performing asset classes. They jointly won 8 places out of the top 10 funds. 
  • Does it Matter: A 1% difference in annual investment return can result in ~50% difference in accumulated retirement benefits over a 40-year saving period.
